Program Note

Obviously inspired by Alice's Adventures in Wonderland  by Lewis Carroll, this piece incorporates knocking on ones instrument, playing inside the piano with a guitar pick (or your fingernails if they’re long and glamorous enough), slamming the piano key cover against the piano, whispering, and stomping. It was a delight to write, and a treat to hear live!

The piece blends traditional tonality with extended techniques. An ostinato is played throughout the piece by the various instruments, therefore the music is constantly doing the same thing over and over, as if we might expect different results.

Madness and insanity each play a role in the original story... perhaps they will here as well.
